  1. PATROL NEAR OSNABRUCK
  2.  
  3. On November 6, 1944, Captain Charles 
  4. "Chuck" Yeager of the 357th FG had an 
  5. encounter with Me 262s in the skies over 
  6. Germany. As Yeager recounted:
  7.  
  8. "I was leading Cement White Flight when 
  9. north of Osnabruck we spotted three 
  10. Me 262s going 180 degrees to us at about 
  11. 2 o'clock low.  We were at 10,000 ft. and 
  12. I and my flight turned to the right and
  13. headed the last man off.  I got a hit or 
  14. two on him before he pulled away.  They 
  15. did not take any evasive action, but 
  16. seemed to depend on their superior speed.  
  17. They pulled out of range in the haze.
  18.  
  19. I flew along for a minute or two and I
  20. met them head-on again only they were
  21. now flying at about 2,000 ft.  I split-
  22. s'd on the leader and they all separated.  
  23. I fired a high deflection burst from 
  24. above on the leader, got behind him and 
  25. was indicating 430 mph.  I fired two or 
  26. three bursts and got hits on the fuselage 
  27. and wings from 300 yards, then he pulled 
  28. away and went into the haze where I lost 
  29. him."

  31. Yeager's experience with these Me 262s is
  32. indicative of how difficult it was for
  33. Allied pilots to successfully engage the
  34. German jets in an open dogfight.

  37.  
  38. You are leading a flight of three Me 262s
  39. on an advanced training mission north of 
  40. Osnabruck.  Be alert for the ever 
  41. increasing presence of American fighters 
  42. on sweep missions.  Once you've completed 
  43. your patrol, return to your home base at 
  44. Osnabruck.
